Development of an Internet of Things (IoT) strategy for the user-centric IoT ecosystem in the construction industry

Challenge

A manufacturer from the construction industry wants to establish direct access to craftsmen via Internet-of-Things (IoT) products to remain a dominant player on the construction site of the future.

Thereby, the goal is to gain a central role in the user-centric ecosystem (consisting of several manufacturers/ service providers) of the modern construction site.

Approach

iq! assisted the company in creating a customer-centric IoT strategy for the construction site of the future.

Therefore, a market assessment of the individual construction components (material, work, safety, etc.) was carried out in three countries, evaluating individual potentials per sub-segment. In cooperation with experts, iq! also defined the “IoT maturity” of the construction industry for each sub-segment.

The needs of craftsmen were ascertained along different user journeys (work planning, way to the construction site, work on the construction site, inventory, etc.) and the respective need for action was derived.

Based on these findings, relevant segments were identified and compared with the customer’s core competencies. A potential analysis per market/segment showed the sales potential. Subsequently, potential ecosystem partners were defined to provide users with a complete IoT ecosystem.

The developed IoT approaches were then queried and tested in focus groups (USA, Germany, South Korea).

Result

A user-centric IoT strategy for the construction industry including implementation roadmap and potential assessment for new IoT products and business areas. Development of an IoT ecosystem with the involvement of various industrial/manufacturer partners.
